On the occasion of the Valentine’s Day we offer you a visit to the wonderful and suggestive Pertosa Caves.
Located in the Alburni Mountains massif, between the municipalities of Pertosa, Auletta and Polla, the Caves of Pertosa-Auletta they develop at 263 meters below sea level and follow the left bank of the Tanagro river, the main left tributary of the Sele.
They have welcomed visitors since 1932 and have two peculiarities: they are the only caves in Italy where it is possible to navigate an underground river, the Negro; and the only ones in Europe to preserve the remains of a pile-dwelling village dating back to the 2nd millennium BC
The Pertosa Caves are about 1 hour and 30 minutes away from the Hotel Calanca.
With the guides, the visit to the caves, touristically equipped (signposted and comfortable routes) and illuminated, turns into a pleasant adventure.
The river offers a fascinating and unusual boat trip, immersed in a magical silence, interrupted only by the roar of the underground waterfall
The “kiss” between a stalactite and a stalagmite is fascinating, a true beauty of nature that shows the union between two bodies.
“It is estimated that for about twenty thousand years these concretions have been growing slowly trying to touch each other”, explain the managers of the social profile of the Caves, celebrating the event with a post. «They will form a single body, which will take the name of “column”».
“This phenomenon indicates that it is a living cave, in continuous evolution”. In twenty thousand years, “the drops of water, marking time, first gave birth to small cannulas to arrive today at real calcareous concretions”. Their growth, influenced by environmental factors (temperature, humidity, air circulation, and many others), «continues as a solid love relationship, and soon they will unite in a single body which will take the name of a column.
The stalactites (from the Greek stalaktites meaning «dripping») and the stalagmites (from the Greek stalagma «drop) are mineral formations produced by the accumulation of calcium carbonate deposited by groundwater over time. The former form from the “ceiling” and extend downwards. The latter follow an inverse path: they come up from the floor of a cave subject to karst phenomena. The formation of large stalactites requires very long times, even of the order of thousands of years.
